ลูกสุนัขในชุดหนึ่งๆ นั้นที่ออกมาล้วนมีความแตกต่างในตัวของแต่ละตัวอยู่ไม่มากก็น้อย ดังนั้นจึงทำให้ราคาของแต่ละตัวนั้นแตกต่างกันไป  ซึ่งการแบ่งแยกเกรดนั้นขึ้นด้วยเหตุปัจจัยหลักๆ ดังต่อไปนี้

ประการแรก ตัวพ่อแม่พันธุ์ คุณภาพอยู่ในระดับไหน มีผลงานด้านประกวดบ้างหรือไม่  รวมถึงผลของการให้ลูกในชุดก่อนๆ เป็นไปในทิศทางใด ที่สามารถจำแนกให้เห็นความแตกต่างในลูกที่ออกมาในชุดนั้น ๆ ซึ่งจะไปในทางพ่อพันธุ์  หรือแม่พันธุ์ มากกว่ากัน จะได้เป็นองค์ประกอบในการกำหนดเกรดของลูกสุนัขตัวนั้นๆ ซึ่งแบ่งคร่าวๆ คือ
             พ่อแม่พันธุ์ แบบวางตามแผนในการผสมเพื่อพัฒนาสายพันธุ์ หรือเพื่อการประกวด
             พ่อแม่พันธุ์ แบบลองซ้ำจากครั้งก่อน ว่ามีการถ่ายทอดที่ใกล้เคียงกันหรือไม่
และ  พ่อแม่พันธุ์ เพื่อการทดลอง ตามสมมุติฐานที่ต้องการศึกษา ในการถ่ายทอดผลงานออกมา
เนื่องจากทุกรายละเอียดนั้นมีผลต่อผลงานทั้งสิ้น จึงต้องพินิจพิจารณาเป็นอย่างดีในการเลือกสรรค์ทุกขั้นตอน และต้องมีการประเมินผลล่วงหน้าไว้อย่างชัดเจน เพื่อเป็นตัวกำหนดทิศทาง เมื่อเห็นผลงานในชุดนั้นๆ ออกมา
